Many different Rum based cocktails have simple syrups as an ingredient. A well made grenadine has a sour component that works to perfectly balance the rich flavours of Rum. This DIY grenadine recipe is very simple and only takes 30 minutes to make! Unlike traditional simple syrup, this cocktail essential adds more than sweetness, it has a really delightful flavor too!
It will last up to a month in the fridge and you can freeze it, it can last about 6 months in the freezer.
The name "grenadine," originates from the word grenade which is the French word for the primary ingredient – pomegranate which itself comes from Italian “pome” (apple) and “granate” (seed).
Grenadine syrup, with its sweet and sour flavor, complements most rum drinks, from light to dark rum as well as flavored rum cocktails, such as rum punches and spiced rum drinks. These are some popular cocktails which use grenadine - Sunset Rum Punch, Mai Tai, Hurricane or Bahama Mama.
For this recipe you will need a saucepan, a whisk, a funnel and a jar or bottle to keep the grenadine in.
450 grams of 100% pomegranate juice
2 cups granulated sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Combine all the ingredients in the saucepan and cook over medium heat until the edges of the liquid begin to bubble and the sugar is fully dissolved. DO NOT BOIL.
Remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature before you bottle it.
The Grenadine will last for about a month in an air-tight bottle in the refrigerator.
