The Daiquiri is a very simple yet elegant cocktail, with the original recipe containing only three ingredients. This drink was a favourite of both Ernest Hemmingway and John F. Kennedy.
In the book, The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, author David A. Embury states that “a drink will never be any better than the quality of the cheapest ingredient in it” and I could not agree more. This becomes especially apparent in a simple cocktail like the Daiquiri which should be a perfect balance of sweet and sour.
With the natural sweetness, zero sugar and high quality of The Great White Rum, it is entirely possible to leave out an ingredient of this cocktail, the sugar. However, for those who do prefer a slightly sweeter cocktail, I have provided the option for added sweetness.
2 Shots(50ml) of The Great White Rum
½ a Shot (12.5ml) Fresh Lime Juice
½ a Teaspoon of Castor Sugar/Simple Syrup (Optional)
A Slice of Lime for garnish (Optional)
In a cocktail shaker add the Rum and Fresh Lime Juice along with a scoop of ice. (For a sweeter option, add in the Castor Sugar/Simple Syrup here too)
Shake the contents until frosted.
Strain into either a chilled martini glass or a similar glass with ice.
Add a slice of lime or lime zest for garnish.
This recipe, while very well balanced, won't appeal to everyone. I encourage people with different tastes to slightly adjust the ratio of Rum to Lime Juice for the sugar free Daiquiri. Likewise, for those who do not choose the sugar free option, please feel free to adjust the ratio of Rum to Lime Juice to Castor Sugar/Simple Syrup.
